What Size Water Softener Do I Need for Well Water? (Grain Calculator)
Well water in much of the US is hard, and many wells carry some iron too. A softener fixes the scale, spotty dishes and stiff laundry, but only if it is the right size.
Too small and it regenerates every day or two, wasting salt and water and wearing the valve. Too big and the resin sits idle, which can let bacteria and iron foul it. This guide and calculator size a softener for your household and your water test.

| Household | Moderate hardness (10 GPG) | Hard water (20 GPG) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 2 people | 24k grain | 24k to 32k grain |
| 3 to 4 people | 24k to 32k grain | 48k to 64k grain |
| 5 to 6 people | 40k to 48k grain | 80k to 96k grain |
Assumes 75 gallons per person per day, a weekly regeneration and no iron. Iron pushes you up a size, so use the calculator with your test results.
Water Softener Size Calculator
Enter your household and the hardness and iron figures from your water test. Switch to mg/L if your lab reported hardness as calcium carbonate in mg/L or ppm.
Estimate only. Adds 4 GPG of hardness for each 1 ppm of iron, converts mg/L to GPG by dividing by 17.1, and recommends a size that uses about 75% or less of its rated capacity per cycle so it can run on an efficient salt setting.
How Softener Sizing Works
Softeners are rated in grains, the amount of hardness they can remove before they need to regenerate. The sizing formula has three steps:
- Daily water use. People x gallons per person per day. 75 gallons is a common planning figure; low flow homes may use 60.
- Daily grains. Daily gallons x compensated hardness in grains per gallon (GPG).
- Capacity per cycle. Daily grains x days between regenerations. Seven days is the usual target.
Example: 4 people x 75 gallons x 20 GPG = 6,000 grains a day, or 42,000 grains a week. A 64,000 grain softener handles that comfortably on a moderate salt setting.
Why Iron Changes the Answer
A softener can remove small amounts of dissolved (clear water) iron, but iron takes up resin capacity. The common rule is to add 4 GPG to your hardness for every 1 ppm of iron. That adjusted figure is called compensated hardness.
So 15 GPG hardness with 2 ppm of iron sizes like 23 GPG water. Higher iron, or iron that turns orange in a glass (oxidized iron), is better handled by a dedicated iron filter ahead of the softener. Iron and sulfur often travel together, so if you also smell rotten eggs, read rotten egg smell in well water.
Converting Your Water Test Results
| Your test shows | How to convert to GPG |
|---|---|
| Hardness in mg/L or ppm (as CaCO3) | Divide by 17.1. For example 257 mg/L is about 15 GPG. |
| Hardness in GPG | Use as is. |
| Test strip color band | Use the GPG printed on the chart, then confirm with a lab test. |
| Iron in mg/L or ppm | Same number in ppm. Multiply by 4 and add to hardness. |

Well water test kit with hardness and iron
Sizing a softener without a hardness and iron number is guesswork. A multi parameter kit covers both, plus pH, which matters if your water is acidic.
- Tests hardness, iron, pH and more
- Results in minutes at the kitchen sink
- Send a sample to a certified lab for bacteria
Cheap insurance before you buy a softener.
Strips are less precise than a lab test.
Salt Setting and Efficiency
Grain ratings are measured at the highest salt dose, which is the least efficient. Running a larger softener on a lower salt setting uses noticeably less salt for each grain removed.
That is why the calculator suggests a size with some headroom. A 48k softener working at 75% of its rating will usually use less salt than a 32k softener pushed to its maximum.
Flow Rate: The Other Half of Sizing
A softener also has to pass your peak flow without a big pressure drop. Larger resin tanks generally allow more flow, so a home with three or more bathrooms may need a bigger unit than grains alone suggest.
Check the service flow rating against your home’s peak demand. If you are unsure of your demand, the well pump size calculator estimates it from your fixture count.
Where the Softener Goes in a Well System
On most wells the treatment order runs: pressure tank, sediment filter, iron filter or acid neutralizer if needed, then the softener, then any UV or drinking water filter. The sediment filter protects the softener valve and resin from sand.
If your water is acidic, fix the pH first with an acid neutralizer, since it raises hardness slightly. For whole house options that combine stages, see the best whole house water filter for well water.
Metered water softener with a Fleck 5600SXT style valve
A metered (demand initiated) valve regenerates based on the water you actually use, not a fixed calendar. That saves salt and water when the house is quiet.
- Sold in 32k to 80k grain sizes
- Digital metered valve with bypass
- Pair with a sediment prefilter on well water
Widely serviced valve with parts easy to find.
Installation needs a drain, a power outlet and some plumbing work.
Frequently Asked Questions
What size water softener do I need for a family of 4?
At 15 to 20 GPG hardness and no iron, most families of 4 need a 48,000 to 64,000 grain softener for a weekly regeneration. Add iron and very hard water and you may need 64,000 to 80,000 grains.
How do I calculate what size water softener I need?
Multiply people by 75 gallons a day, then by your compensated hardness in GPG (hardness plus 4 for each ppm of iron), then by 7 days. Choose a softener rated above that number, ideally with about 25% headroom.
Can a water softener remove iron from well water?
A softener can remove small amounts of dissolved iron, and each ppm adds about 4 GPG to the sizing. Higher iron or oxidized iron should go through an iron filter first to protect the resin.
Is a bigger water softener better?
Up to a point. Some headroom lets it run on an efficient salt setting, but a softener far too large regenerates so rarely that the resin can foul. Aim to regenerate about once a week.
How do I convert mg/L hardness to grains per gallon?
Divide mg/L (or ppm) of hardness as calcium carbonate by 17.1. For example, 342 mg/L is 20 grains per gallon.
