Best Water Softener for Well Water (2026): Iron, Hardness and Sizing
Most well owners shopping for a softener have the same problem: hard water and some iron. A softener built for city water handles the hardness, but iron fouls the resin and the orange stains come back.
This guide picks the best water softeners for well water, explains how much iron a softener can really handle, and sizes one for your house in under a minute.

Well Water Softener Picker
Do not guess the size. Grab your water test, fill in the four boxes, and the picker gives you a grain size and a matching softener.
Enter the numbers from your water test. The picker sizes the softener and matches one of the picks below.
Uses 75 gallons per person per day, a weekly regeneration and the common rule of adding 4 GPG for each ppm of iron. Estimate only.

Can a Water Softener Remove Iron From Well Water?
Yes, but only small amounts of dissolved iron, the kind that comes out of the tap clear and turns orange in a glass after a while. A softener swaps that iron out the same way it swaps out calcium and magnesium.
The catch is capacity. Each ppm of iron uses up resin capacity, which is why sizing guides add about 4 GPG to your hardness for every 1 ppm of iron (SoftPro sizing formula).
- Under about 0.5 ppm: any well sized softener copes. Add a sediment prefilter.
- About 0.5 to 3 ppm of clear water iron: pick a softener with fine mesh resin and clean the resin a few times a year.
- Above about 3 ppm, or iron that is already orange when it leaves the tap: fit a dedicated iron filter ahead of the softener. Our best iron filters for well water guide covers those.
Those cut offs are a practical rule of thumb, not a law of chemistry. pH, manganese and bacteria all change how iron behaves, so treat the numbers as a starting point and follow the maker’s limits for the unit you buy.
The EPA lists iron as a secondary contaminant with a guideline of 0.3 mg/L, which is about taste and staining rather than health (EPA). That is why even a little iron leaves marks on fixtures.
The 5 Best Water Softeners for Well Water
Every pick below is a salt based ion exchange softener with a metered valve, which regenerates on the water you actually use. Salt free conditioners do not remove hardness minerals, so they are not on this list.
1. AFWFilters Fleck 5600SXT 48,000 Grain
The Fleck 5600SXT valve is the most widely serviced softener valve in the US, so parts and help are easy to find. This build uses 10% crosslink resin, which holds up better than standard resin and resists chlorine if you ever shock the well.
- 1.5 cubic feet of 10% crosslink resin
- 10 x 54 inch mineral tank, 14 x 36 inch brine tank holding 250 lb of salt
- 1 inch NPT connections with bypass and drain fittings
- 4.6 stars from 547 ratings
Durable resin and a valve almost any plumber knows.
Costs more than the Aquasure, and you buy the prefilter separately.
2. Fleck 5600SXT 48K Softener and Iron Filter
If your test shows clear water iron under about 3 ppm, this is the one to look at. It uses fine mesh resin, which has more surface area and grabs iron better than standard beads, so one tank handles hardness and light iron staining.
- 48,000 grain capacity with fine mesh resin
- Fleck 5600SXT digital metered valve, 5 year valve warranty
- Sized for 2 to 5 people and 2 to 3 bathrooms
- 4.5 stars from 139 ratings
One unit for hardness and low iron.
Not a substitute for an iron filter at high iron levels.
3. Aquasure Harmony Series 48,000 Grain
The best seller of the group, with more than 3,000 ratings. It ships with a sediment, carbon and zinc prefilter, which is useful on a well where grit and odor are part of the problem.
- 48,000 grain capacity
- Rated for 3 to 4 bathrooms
- Includes a triple purpose prefilter
- 4.4 stars from 3,200+ ratings
Lowest price for a 48k unit with a prefilter.
Standard resin, so it is less tolerant of iron than a fine mesh unit.
4. Aquasana SimplySoft 40K
Aquasana’s softener is certified by IAPMO to NSF/ANSI Standard 44 for hardness reduction, which means its performance claims have been independently checked. It comes in a single cabinet that looks tidy in a utility room.
- 40,000 grain capacity
- For homes with up to 5 people and 4 bathrooms
- NSF/ANSI 44 and CSA B483.1 certified
- 5 and 10 year limited warranty
Independent certification and a compact cabinet.
Smaller capacity than the 48k picks at a higher price.
5. Aquasure Harmony Series 32,000 Grain
For a couple or a small family with moderate hardness, a 32k unit is plenty. It uses less salt and space than a 48k unit and still regenerates about once a week in a small house.
- 32,000 grain capacity
- Sized for 1 to 2 bathrooms
- Same prefilter bundle as the 48k model
- 4.4 stars from 3,200+ ratings
Right sized and affordable for small households.
Too small for hard water with iron in a large family.

Where the Softener Goes in a Well System
On a private well, the order of treatment matters as much as the softener itself. A typical layout after the pressure tank looks like this:
- Sediment filter. Protects the softener valve from sand. See the best whole house sediment filters.
- Acid neutralizer, only if your pH is below about 6.5. See acid neutralizers for well water.
- Iron filter, if iron is high or already oxidized.
- Water softener.
- UV light or drinking water filter, if bacteria or other contaminants show up on your lab test.
If your water smells like rotten eggs, deal with that before you buy a softener. Our guide to rotten egg smell in well water explains why.
How to Choose a Water Softener for Well Water
- Size by grains, not bathrooms. People x 75 gallons x compensated hardness x 7 days gives your weekly load. Our softener size calculator does the math.
- Metered valve. It regenerates based on use, which saves salt and water compared with a timer.
- Resin type. Fine mesh for iron, 10% crosslink for durability.
- Flow rate. A big house with three or more bathrooms needs a valve and tank that can pass its peak flow without a pressure drop.
- Drain and power. The softener needs a drain for the backwash and an outlet. Plan this before the box arrives.
- Your pump can keep up. Regeneration uses water. On a low yield well, schedule it at night so it does not compete with the house.
What a Softener Costs to Run
The unit is the big cost, but salt is the one you notice every month. A family of four with moderately hard water often goes through one or two 40 lb bags a month, more with iron.
Running a slightly larger softener on a lower salt setting uses less salt per grain removed, which is why the picker leaves 25% headroom. Water used for regeneration matters on a well too, so a metered valve pays for itself over time.
Worried about sodium? A softener adds a small amount of sodium to the water. Potassium chloride can replace salt in most units, and many homes leave one kitchen tap unsoftened for drinking.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best water softener for well water with iron?
For clear water iron under about 3 ppm, a softener with fine mesh resin such as the Fleck 5600SXT softener and iron filter is a good fit. Above about 3 ppm, or when the iron is already orange, put an iron filter ahead of the softener.
What size water softener do I need for well water?
Multiply people by 75 gallons, then by your hardness plus 4 for each ppm of iron, then by 7 days. A family of 4 with 15 GPG and 1 ppm of iron needs about 40,000 grains a week, so a 48,000 grain unit is a good fit.
Do I need a sediment filter before a water softener on a well?
Yes. Sand and silt can damage the softener valve and foul the resin. A spin down or cartridge sediment filter ahead of the softener is cheap protection.
Can I use a salt free water softener on well water?
Salt free conditioners change how minerals form scale but do not remove hardness or iron. On a well with real hardness and iron, a salt based softener is the tool that removes them.
How often should a well water softener regenerate?
About once a week is the usual target. Much more often wastes salt and water; much less can let iron and bacteria foul the resin.
